When Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right”. Was he referring to Growth vs Fixed mindset?
Many years later, the research by Prof. Carol Dweck brought out the true depth and power of the concept of Growth vs Fixed mindset.
In Growth mindset, individuals believe that their intelligence and talents can be improved through effort and actions. Setbacks are a part of the learning process and the learning opportunity itself is motivating.
Those who adopt a Growth mindset show love for learning and continuous improvement. They are resilient and get inspired from success of others. They use of feedback as information that feeds improvement, and they embrace challenges.
Among many benefits of adopting a Growth mindset, some that contribute to greater fulfilment include reduced burnout, enhanced mindfulness, healthier relationships, and continuous growth (professional and personal).
In Fixed mindset individuals believe that their intelligence and talents are innate gifts. They believe that they are born with their level of intelligence and natural talents that they reach in adulthood. They might feel the need to be acknowledged for their gifts.
People stuck in a Fixed mindset often feel stressed and burnt out, report psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. Their relationships are affected negatively both in personal and work life.
So the 2 million dollar questions are – On which side do you see yourself today? and On which side do you want to be?
Good news!!!
Research shows that a person’s mindset can change.
Studies in Neuroscience show that brain continues to develop and change throughout our lifetime. The growth mindset behaviours can be learnt and supporting habits can be developed over time. Over the years, many research-based tools, concepts and support resources have been developed to enable the shift from fixed to growth mindset. Though this shift will require consistency of effort and commitment
So the most important first step is to recognise the need and get the conversation started.
