A Guide to Discovering Your Passion

In my Coaching practice, I frequently come across clients who have been busy throughout their lives doing lots of things they perceive as important, and many times feel drained at the end. Many are unable to answer the question – What are the things and activities you have been doing for many years that you were really passionate about?

On deeper reflection, some of them say “I don’t know what I am passionate about.” Or “ I have not identified/discovered my passion as yet”.

These questions then form the starting point of deeper discovery of one’s passion. We then explore deeper keeping in mind that each individual is unique and the journey of discovering one’s passion itself can take different routes.

Starting with the question, Why is it important to discover one’s passion? What value does knowing one’s passion bring to the individual?

Research has shown that individuals who have identified and embraced their passions experience higher levels of life satisfaction and overall well-being. A study conducted by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi revealed that people who engage in activities they are passionate about are more likely to experience a state of flow – a mental state of complete absorption and focused motivation.

Through practice and research, I have found the following additional reasons for which it makes sense to focus on identifying and pursuing one’s passion:

  • Fulfillment and Happiness

Knowing and engaging in activities that align with one’s passion brings a sense of fulfillment and contributes to overall happiness.

  • Increased Motivation

Pursuing one’s passion provides a natural source of motivation. When we love what we do, the drive to excel and overcome challenges becomes intrinsic, fueling our commitment to our goals.

  • Enhanced Well-being

Research shows that individuals who actively pursue their passions experience higher levels of well-being. Engaging in activities that bring joy can positively impact mental and emotional health.

  • Improved Productivity

When you are passionate about our work or interests, we are more likely to invest time and effort, resulting in increased productivity and higher-quality output.

  • Sense of Purpose

Discovering one’s passion often leads to a clearer sense of purpose. It gives life direction and meaning, helping to set meaningful goals and navigate challenges with resilience.

  • Resilience in the Face of Challenges

When faced with setbacks, individuals driven by their passion are more likely to persevere and find creative solutions to challenges.

  • Positive Influence on Others

By living authentically and pursuing what we love, we become positive role models, encouraging others to follow their own passions.

  • Long-term Commitment

Unlike fleeting interests, passions are enduring, providing a stable foundation for long-term dedication to personal and professional pursuits.

In essence, discovering one’s passion is not just about finding a hobby or a career; it’s about crafting a life that resonates with authenticity and purpose. It serves as a guiding force, shaping decisions, actions, and ultimately leading to a more meaningful and satisfying existence.

Then comes the question: Am I too old to now think about my passion?

Discovering one’s passion has not correlation with one’s age or stage of life. It’s never too late, you can never miss this train.

There are many examples of people who found and pursued their passions later in life. Here are two of my favourites.

Samuel L. Jackson: Before becoming a Hollywood legend, Samuel L. Jackson initially pursued a degree in marine biology. However, his true passion for acting emerged later. He got his breakthrough in his 40s with roles in films like “Pulp Fiction” and went on to become one of the highest-grossing actors of all time.

Julia Child: The iconic chef and author discovered her love for cooking and French cuisine in her late 30s. Her passion led her to culinary school, and she later revolutionized the way Americans approached cooking with her renowned cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”

Now comes the question: How can I find my passion?

Like I said, each individual is unique and there is not standard process to held discover one’s passion. In practice, I have found the following considerations can help most individuals to identify their passion.

  • Reflect on Your Interests

Take a moment to introspect and identify the activities that genuinely bring you joy. Reflect on your hobbies, interests, and moments when you’ve felt truly alive.

  • Explore New Horizons

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Trying new things can lead to unexpected discoveries. Attend workshops, join clubs, or volunteer in areas that intrigue you.

  • Pay Attention to Your Energy

Take note of activities that energize you rather than drain you. Your passion is often found in the pursuits that leave you feeling invigorated and inspired.

  • Connect with Like-Minded People

Surround yourself with people who share similar interests. Engaging with a community of individuals who are passionate about the same things can provide support and encouragement.

  • Learn from Failures

Understand that the path to discovering your passion may involve setbacks. Embrace failures as opportunities for growth and learning more about yourself.

And last question: How will I know that I have found my passion?

Remember that feeling of knowing one’s passion is very intrinsic. You will know and will be able to explicitly describe your passion when you have found it. In general, your passion will give you feelings of happiness, energy, engagement and motivation. You will feel being in state of flow and connectedness when pursuing your passion.

Also remember that has as you explore new areas in life, you might discover new passions. Shifts in passions is absolutely normal. Just keep exploring and stay aware of your passion at all times.
